October annual Chinese festival, street parades, vegetarian or vegan diet observed, sexual abstinence, no alcohol, rites at local shrines and temples, entranced devotees pierce themselves, walk barefoot over hot coals and climb ladders with bladed rungs. Onlookers throw firecrackers, and the final parade ends in Sapan Hin, where Chinese paper is burned, and spirits leave the possessed.
