September 15, 2015, San Jose celebrations are some most elaborate in the country; grand parades, mascaradas (clowns), cimarronas, marching bands, a parade of homemade lanterns, plus patriotic banners and decorations around the city. A community event, without military overtones -- Costa Rica abolished the army in 1949, following their civil war.
